iRobot Roomba Plus 505 Combo AutoWash review

A dual-spinning-pad vacuum-mop package whose tank-based dock transfers dust, refreshes and washes the pads, then dries them; the owner still services the removable water tanks.

A useful fit for

A fit when recurring mopping makes dual spinning pads and automatic dock washing/drying worth the footprint and tank chores, the 4.2-inch body and route clear, and the home can use either supported Wi-Fi band.

The main tradeoff

The AutoWash dock is not hands-off: its water tanks need owner care and their capacity is unpublished. Pad-drying is not evidence of heated water on the floor or a published wash temperature; high-pile suitability and threshold maximum are also unconfirmed.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Is the exact 505's dual-spinning-pad mop system essential, rather than a flat removable microfiber cloth?

The 505 page identifies DualClean dual spinning pads; the 105 Combo AutoEmpty uses a removable microfiber pad instead.

Explore this need in the finder →
Can your home accept removable dock tanks instead of requiring a fixed supply and drain?

Yes. The 505's AutoWash dock has removable tanks to rinse/refill and no fixed plumbing requirement is documented.

Explore this need in the finder →
Will the 4.2-inch robot fit your furniture route with practical clearance margin?

Its listed body height is 4.2 inches: a 4.25-inch opening is only nominally taller, while a 4.00-inch opening is too low on the published dimensions.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does a published 75°C dock mop-wash minimum matter more than a heat-dry feature?

The 505 is documented to heat-dry pads, but its reviewed U.S. page and support chart do not publish the dock wash-water temperature; unknown is not a 75°C match.

Explore this need in the finder →
Does the chart-listed battery capacity meet your threshold without treating capacity as runtime?

The iRobot chart lists 5,000 mAh LFP for the 505 series; this is an optional capacity comparison, not a runtime promise.

Explore this need in the finder →
Do you require a published high-pile suitability statement for this robot?

A yes answer is an essential condition, but the exact 505 U.S. materials publish no supported carpet-pile height. Choose no only if that limit need not be established.

The Roomba Plus 505 Combo robot + AutoWash dock is a mapped vacuum-mop package whose main distinction is not a headline suction number: the dock handles both dust disposal and repeated care of its twin rotating mop pads. The exact U.S. black SKU is N185020; the white N185220 is a finish-only companion in the same Roomba-505-Combo-Series-Robots product group. Both product pages list the same robot, AutoWash dock and operating features. This assessment is about that combined package, not a vacuum-only Roomba or the separate 507 model.

What the AutoWash dock changes

During a mop routine, iRobot says the dock refreshes the pads as needed, washes them when the job ends and heat-dries them. It also empties robot debris into a bag and runs a self-cleaning cycle. That is a substantial reduction in direct pad handling compared with a robot whose owner must remove and wash a cloth after each use. It does not eliminate chores: the two removable dock tanks still need regular rinsing and refilling, the filter and brushes still need care, and the owner's guide describes routine checks. iRobot advertises up to 75 days of dust disposal and about four weeks of pad washing, with the latter based on one mopping run each week. Those are operating-condition claims, not guarantees for a pet-heavy or larger home. The U.S. support chart lists the AutoWash dock at roughly 13.0 × 13.4 × 19.1 inches (width, depth, height); budget space for the dock, its power connection and a route that lets the robot park squarely.

The product uses DualClean pads that spin at a stated 200 rpm. PerfectEdge is described as extending the mop's reach near edges, SmartScrub as adding a back-and-forth scrub, and the app offers four suction levels and repeat passes. These are design and manufacturer claims, not evidence of results on a particular stain or floor. A support article lists 7,000 Pa maximum suction, a 5,000 mAh LFP battery, an up-to-180-minute hard-floor runtime and a 4.5-hour recharge for the 505 family. The runtime is attributed to iRobot's Home Test Lab and the maker notes that it varies. Do not read the battery or suction figures as a measured pickup ranking.

Mop modes, carpets and water

The app offers vacuum-only, mop-only, combined vacuum-and-mop, and vacuum-first-then-mop modes. iRobot says the pads lift automatically when the robot senses carpet and that it avoids carpet during mop and combined runs. This is not the same feature as a robot that removes its mop mount before vacuuming. If your routine depends on fully removing the wet assembly, choose a model with that exact function; a lift is not detachment. Nor does carpet detection establish a supported pile height. The reviewed U.S. materials give no maximum pile figure, and the 505 should not be counted as a confirmed high-pile choice just because marketing describes carpet cleaning.

Heat-drying the pads is also different from applying heated water to the floor. The product page describes heated pad drying, but it publishes no dock-wash temperature and no warm-water mopping temperature. Leave both facts unknown. iRobot's North American care article lists solutions approved for the Plus 505 series and warns not to use hot water or water mixed with vinegar in the water tank. Follow the exact instructions rather than assuming that a heated drying cycle means hot water is used during a pass. Dock clean- and dirty-water capacities are not published in the reviewed U.S. material, so a household that must know those numbers before buying should keep looking.

Measure the route and check the network

The exact product page lists a 14.1 × 13.8 × 4.2-inch robot weighing 9.44 pounds. A nominal 4.25-inch furniture opening is only slightly taller than the body; measure the tightest point along the entire path and leave practical margin for uneven floors or a low skirt. A 4.00-inch opening is below the published body height. The page recommends placing the dock on a hard floor and at least four feet from stairs, with room to enter and leave. The taller station can be a more significant placement constraint than the robot.

For mapped use, ClearView Pro LiDAR works alongside a front camera and PrecisionVision obstacle detection. iRobot lists the 505 with up to five maps and supports 2.4- and 5-GHz Wi-Fi in its compatibility chart. The manufacturer describes recognition of some common floor objects; that should not be treated as an unconditional promise to avoid every cord or pet accident. The app is central to room and zone routines. Apple Home/Matter integration has device and home-hub requirements, while the product also lists Alexa, Siri and Google Assistant voice control.

Who it fits—and what to compare

Choose the 505 if you want a true rotating-pad mop, dust auto-emptying and an automatic wash/dry cycle, can accommodate the dock's footprint and will still service its tanks. It is more compelling when mopping is a regular job; the extra wet-system complexity buys less value if you mostly want dry pickup. The plain Roomba 105 Combo + AutoEmpty is a simpler alternative: it has a removable flat microfiber pad and its dock transfers dust, but it does not wash or dry the pad. That 105 Combo body is listed at 4.09 inches and its network support is 2.4 GHz only, so it may suit tighter openings but not a 5-GHz-only home. The 105 Vac + AutoEmpty is the more appropriate comparison if you do not want a mop at all. For anyone requiring a stated mop-wash temperature or a published carpet-pile limit, do not assume the 505 meets it: check an exact configuration with that claim instead.
