Docks and installation
S8 Max Ultra R&D or Saros 10 R&D: fit the plumbing first
“Refill and Drainage System” sounds like one feature, but a plumbed station is a home-installation choice as much as a robot upgrade. Roborock’s S8 Max Ultra R&D and Saros 10 R&D both replace removable dock reservoirs with a fixed water supply and drain. Their robot hardware, app routines and installation requirements are not interchangeable. Decide first whether your home can support a permanent station, then compare the robot and mop choices.
Check whether your room can support a fixed-water dock
The S8 Max Ultra with Refill & Drainage System is the U.S. package built around an S83USC robot and EWFD14LRR Auto dock. Its manual calls for room-temperature tap water, 0.1–0.4 MPa inlet pressure, a drain opening at least 15 mm wide, a grounded nominal 120 V outlet and clear dock placement of at least 30.5 cm high, 42 cm wide and 1 m deep. The drain line’s high point must be no more than 1 m above the dock floor, preferably no more than 0.5 m. The manual shows a 1/4-inch inlet pipe and 3/8-inch drainpipe. It also says not to route plumbing through doorways or corridors and not to use water hotter than room temperature at the supply.
The Saros 10 with R&D is a separate package with robot S90VER and EWFD33LRR Auto dock. Its exact product page and linked manual establish its own installation limits; do not assume a compatible-looking pipe, dock, or robot-family title makes the accessories interchangeable. For either model, locate a shutoff, drain, outlet and app Wi-Fi coverage at the same site before choosing the robot route. If that placement cannot work, a tank-based dock is not a lesser answer—it may be the practical fit.
Compare the robots after the installation test
The S8 Max Ultra body is listed at 3.8 inches and its published suction maximum is 8,000 Pa. It uses a DuoRoller Riser brush and VibraRise 3.0, which vibrates the cloth and can lift the mop module up to 20 mm. An Edgewise mop and extending FlexiArm side brush add separate edge and corner routines. The station page claims up to 140°F dock washing and heated-air drying; the temperature is a dock-side claim, not a published floor-mopping water temperature. Its exact manual supports 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only.
The reviewed Saros 10 R&D body is 3.14 inches, its listed maximum suction is 22,000 Pa, and its robot uses retractable-LDS navigation, VibraRise 4.0 and an edgewise mop module. Its exact U.S. materials also list warm water delivered for the robot’s mop cycle and an 80°C dock wash; the numeric mop-water claim is separate from station washing. These are feature-sheet differences and do not substitute for independent cleaning measurements. Both exact manuals have important floor/use rules, including a prohibition against high-pile carpet for the reviewed Saros 10 package. Review the particular model’s warning before counting it for carpet coverage.
Keep the water stages and care chores distinct
A fixed inlet feeds the dock’s clean-water operation and the drain carries used water away, but it does not mean every part becomes maintenance-free. Both stations still need the dust bag, mop cloths, filter, wash components, solution and sensors checked or cleaned. The S8 Max Ultra manual warns against disinfectants, recommends Roborock’s cleaning solution and notes that solution is not included. It asks the owner to vacuum floors at least three times before the first mop cycle. Roborock’s S8 FAQ says the dock wash uses hot water early in the cycle, but the manual’s water inlet still calls for room-temperature tap water. Do not confuse a heated mop-wash process with warm water being applied to the floor by the robot.
Which one makes sense?
Choose the S8 Max Ultra R&D if the 3.8-inch body is sufficient for your furniture, its vibrating cloth system suits your floors, and the specific plumbing layout is workable. The Saros 10 R&D is worth comparing when the lower body, retractable LiDAR or documented 70°C mop-water routine matters more; check its more advanced system against the exact home, not just headline numbers. If you cannot install a fixed line and drain, look at a verified tank-dock package instead. The S8 Max Ultra R&D review covers the pipe, pressure, space and Wi-Fi limits; the Saros 10 R&D review details its own manual and route constraints.
