Setup and ownership
Prepare and maintain a robot vacuum without guesswork
A robot vacuum can follow a saved map, but it still needs a safe first route and regular cleaning. Treat the exact model's manual as the source for installation, floor limits, maintenance intervals and consumables. A similar family name does not prove that another dock or software version uses the same instructions.
Set up the station before the first run
Place the dock on a hard, level floor with the clearance shown in its manual. Leave access to the tank lids, dust-bag door and wash tray. Keep the power lead outside the robot's travel. Avoid rugs or mats beneath the station if the manual warns that soft surfaces can tilt it. The network needs to support the bands listed by the manufacturer; the reviewed Qrevo Curv, Curv S5X and CurvX manuals specify 2.4GHz Wi-Fi.
Install the correct mop mounts and pads, fill the clean-water tank as instructed and check that the dirty-water tank and disposable bag are seated. Do not add a generic disinfectant or unapproved floor solution. For the first run, tidy cords, sharp objects, fragile items and anything a brush may drag. Watch the route once so you can correct no-go areas or furniture conflicts before scheduling unattended cleaning.
Not every station handles water. Q10 S5 and X5 have standard charging docks and require hand-emptying the robot bin. Q10 S5+ and X5+ add dust-emptying docks, but all four still need manual water filling, leftover-water emptying, cloth washing and drying. A dock that empties dust does not imply that it cleans the mop.
Prepare the floor for the first mop cycle
Roborock's Curv manuals advise vacuuming floors at least three times before the first mopping cycle to avoid building up dirt in the pads. This is a model-specific instruction, not a universal rule for every robot. If the manufacturer specifies a sequence, follow it and use a dry vacuum routine before introducing wet cloths.
The English Q10 S5, S5+, X5 and X5+ manuals call for three vacuum passes before first mopping. They say not to use these robots on high-pile carpet and warn that dark carpet may reduce effectiveness; a Q10 mop-lifting routine does not override those warnings.
Build a repeatable care routine
Empty dirty water before it sits too long, refill clean water, clean the cloths and check for hair around the brush. The Qrevo manuals call for cleaning the washable filter every two weeks, drying it thoroughly before reinstalling, and replacing it every six to twelve months. The Curv and Curv S5X manuals list mop-cloth cleaning as required and replacement every one to three months. Actual replacement needs depend on wear and use; inspect the part rather than waiting for a fixed date.
Wash the station tray and filter according to the manual. Keep sensors, charging contacts and electrical areas dry. Switch off the robot and unplug the dock before maintenance. Never hose down a robot or electrical station. Manufacturer instructions may prohibit disinfectants or limit which cleaning solutions can be used; a more concentrated floor cleaner is not automatically a better choice.
Check performance without guessing
If a robot misses an area, inspect the map, route obstacles, sensors, filter and brush before assuming that a higher suction number is needed. If the mop does not wash, verify that the robot began from the dock and that the tanks and tray are installed. If it struggles on carpet, check the exact carpet warning and app settings. Follow the manufacturer's troubleshooting steps before ordering a part.
